Serena Williams has said that she would've faced harsher punishment than Jannik Sinner if she had failed drug tests during her decorated tennis career. Sinner received a three-month ban after testing positive for clostebol twice, although an earlier tribunal had cleared him before the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) stepped in. "I love the guy, love this game... but if I did that, I would have gotten 20 years," Williams said. "Let's be honest. I would have gotten Grand Slams taken away from me." Williams said she was always hyper-aware of the substances she consumed, joking that a scandal would've put her “in jail” or in another “multiverse.” Sinner, the current men's world No. 1, denies any wrongdoing, attributing the clostebol traces to a trainer's ointment that was applied during a massage. The case has sparked debate over fairness and whether Sinner benefited from leniency not afforded to other top players facing similar issues. Iga Swiatek was handed a one-month suspension in November after testing positive for trimetazidine, a banned substance, which she claimed was ingested unintentionally. Simona Halep was initially banned for four years for roxadustat, but had her suspension reduced to nine months after appealing to the sports court. Williams retired from tennis after the 2022 US Open, citing a desire to focus on growing her family and new ventures outside the sport.
